How Can You Tell If Your Boat Anodes Are Working or Not? 

We know, this question might bother you once you’ve installed the boat anodes to your vessel. After all, you’ve invested your hard-earned money in them and there’s no point if they’re not doing their job. So here’s the answer to your questions - 

If your boat anode is active, it’ll show you signs. Corrosion is the most important of them. An active boat anode sacrifices itself to protect more vital parts of your boat. In contrast, if it’s inactive, it’ll either corrode slowly or won’t corrode at all. 

What Does an Active Boat Anode Look Like?

When your boat anodes corrode, they show the following signs - 

  • Bubbling: You may notice subtle bubbling on the anode. This is particularly true when it’s first submerged in water. 
  • Material Shedding: Keep a check on your boat anodes while your vessel is in the water. Do you notice a small puff of dust-like material sloughing off? If yes, it means that your anode is still active
  • Reduction in Size: If your boat anodes are active, you’ll surely see them becoming smaller over time. It’s a sign that they are corroding and thus protecting your boat parts.

How Can You Ensure Your Boat Anodes Are Active?

Ensure Metal-to-Metal Contact: Your boat anodes must have direct metal-to-metal contact with the metal boat parts. This contact creates a

  1. protective circuit. In this circuit, the anodic metal corrodes first and shields the cathodic metal. If the metals aren’t in direct contact, the anode might not protect as effectively.
  1. Avoid Air Exposure: Boat anodes can become inactive if they’re exposed to air. Or, even if they’re moved into a different water environment.

When boat owners remove the anode from its electrolyte solution, it can develop an oxidation crust. This blocks the ion flow.  This will decrease the efficiency of your boat anodes.

  1. Monitor for Marine Growth: Here’s an interesting fact - if your boat anodes are active, they’d not show marine growth on them. If sea life attaches itself to the anode, it’s a sign that either the entire anode or a part of it has become inactive. This is bound to reduce the effectiveness of your boat zincs.
  2. Check for Corrosion on Your Boat Parts: If you notice corrosion on the metal parts of your boat, it could mean your anodes aren’t active. In such cases, inspect the anodes and replace them if necessary.

Installing boat anodes can be tricky. Are you sure you’re doing it right? Ask the following questions to yourself while installing boat anodes on your vessel. We’re certain this can save you dollars - 

  1. Is there any layer of paint on the boat parts you’re trying to protect?

Make sure that there’s no paint on the boat parts you’re trying to protect with your anodes.

If there’s a layer of paint on the boat parts you’re trying to protect, this will hinder ion flow between the anode and those boat parts. Once you notice it, the damage will already be done. Similarly, if there’s paint on the anode itself, it will block ion flow. This will make them ineffective.

  1. Is there any layer of marine growth near your boat parts? :

Even a thin, invisible layer of marine growth can create a barrier between the two metals. This will reduce the effectiveness of the protective circuit. So before installing an anode, ensure the attachment point on the metal parts is clean and sanded. This will ensure direct metal-to-metal contact. 

Is there any layer of oxidation on your boat parts? : Just like marine growth, a small layer of oxidation on your metal boat parts can create a barrier that reduces

  1. the efficiency of the anode. Although your anode may still function, it will be less effective. This means you won’t get the full value of your investment. 

How Does Storage and Maintenance Affect Anode Effectiveness?

  1. Dinghy or Motor Storage:

Do you have boat anodes on your dinghy or an outboard motor?

If yes, then you need to be extra cautious. This is because your anodes may lose effectiveness over time. Keep a close eye on the metals that are regularly exposed. If you notice signs of corrosion, it’s time for new anodes.

  1. Dry Docking: When you haul out your boat during the off-season, the anodes from the previous year will likely develop a crust or barrier. This can happen even if it’s not visible. This barrier will prevent them from doing their job when you return your boat to the water.
  2. Haul-Outs: Whenever you take your boat out for maintenance, replace all anodes before putting it back in the water. Also, If you're painting the hull, ensure the yard sands the paint off the anode attachment points before installing new anodes. This prevents barriers that can hinder the anodes’ effectiveness.
